Community Garden and Wilson School area lighting

We have been in contact with Michael Settlemyre of Arlington County Traffic Field Operations to get the light next to the Community Gardens between Key Blvd and 19th Street and the lighting next to the playground, basketball court and park operational. Mr. Settlemyre is asking Virginia Power to prioritize getting the community garden lighting repaired. The community garden light has been burnt out for over 6 months. Also, he will have the county repair the Wilson School pedestrian corridor lighting. These lights are on county property, not school district property.

If you have comments or suggestions regarding these repairs, you may email Mr. Settlemeyer at:

Street light problems may be reported to Arlington County at this web page:

Subject: Lights

Dear Mr. Derby,
I wanted you to know that staff in the Parks and Natural Resources Division of the Department of Parks, Recreation, and Community Resources are investigating what needs to be done about the lights along the walkway between Wilson Boulevard and 18th Street North. Although there may be multiple "owners" of the lights, Mr. Temmermand, the Division Chief, has assured me that his staff will work through the issues.

Thank you for your work in your neighborhood and your interest in making the community safe for all the residents. We appreciate your working with us in the County to address the issues.

Sincerely,
Dotty Dake

The lighting along the sidewalk between Rosslyn Highlands Park (the area with the playground and basketball courts) and Wilson School now has working lights! It has taken a lot of effort by the county to get the wiring replaced and operational and patience by the community, but we now have completion of this initiative to celebrate!

The Wilson School Basketball Court's lights are out. It's been at least a week now. Who should be notified.

Arlington County parks maintains the lighting in Rosslyn Highlands Parks, next to Wilson School. Arlington County parks were notified of the outage on November 13 and they made the repairs and replaced a missing fence post cap at the entry to the tot play area the next day.

A note of thanks from NRCA was sent to Randolph Randall, Park Service Area Manager, for their efficient and quick action to correct the problem.

Unfortunately, Arlington Public Schools, adjacent to the park, are quite lax in maintaining the Wilson School property. The skirting under the trailers is full of holes allowing rats and feral cats to live under the "temporary" buildings. The fencing on the north end of the property where children are dropped off is a dangerous mess with exposed sharp wires and pipes. A complaint has been filed with Arlington County Code Enforcement for these two situations. The code enforcement representative, Dana Wilson, told me that code enforcement doesn't investigate problems on county property. We are hoping this is not true, and that building code violations will be investigated and deficiencies remedied for both private and public buildings in Arlington County, especially those owned by Arlington County Schools.
