All, Suzanne Sundberg, a respected Arlington civic activist, recently warned Falls Church residents to recognize Arlingon’s failed growth policy as a “cautionary tale” of “development gone wrong” with results including “overcrowded schools, “scorched-earth development practices,” “critical shortage of parkland and green space,” “failed policies and inadequate planning,” “poor local air quality,” “lack of mature tree canopy” and “urban heat island effect.” Suzanne’s says the following concerning park space in Rosslyn: “Arlington’s critical shortage of parkland and green space has been discussed since at least 1975. Citizen-volunteers on the Planning Commission’s Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor Committee stated in a June 1975 report that it was “important to note that the [R-B] corridor is already deficient in park acreage… To allow increased development of the corridor without the concurrent purchase of the required parkland would be unconscionable.” I think Suzanne's analysis is sound and profound.
