Dear North Rosslyn Residents, A Boathouse for the Rosslyn shore! This is your chance to voice your opinion to the National Park Service. Deadline for comments is July 30, 2018. A new boathouse facility is currently under consideration due to direction from Congress for enhanced public waterfront access in Arlington County; to alleviate pressures on the current boathouses, all of which are operating at capacity; and to provide facilities for use by Arlington High School rowing teams. Two sites are under consideration: Rosslyn riverfront opposite the northern end of Roosevelt Island and Gravelly Point. The plan is to build a 14,000 sq. ft. boat storage facility with a 300-foot long floating dock. At the Rosslyn site, there are two alternatives: B) to build just the lower boat storage and dock down by the water’s edge or C) to build alternative B plus an upper Support Facility (locker rooms, education center, office) on the hill above the foot bridge over the GW Parkway. No motorized boats would be allowed at the Rosslyn site. Any trees removed during construction will be replanted. If you turn north at the bottom of the footbridge over the GW Parkway as it intersects the Roosevelt Island parking lot, you can see the meadow where the boat storage facility would be built. The Park service lists the alternatives under consideration as follows: Alternative A: No Action (no new facility) Alternative B: Build on the lower Rosslyn site only Alternative C: Build both the lower and upper portions of the Rosslyn site Alternative D: Build on the Gravelly Point site For the first time, the Park Service has identified Alternative C as the preferred Alternative. The Rosslyn site is calmer which improves boater safety and would allow for more days on the water with less interference from power boats than the Gravelly Point site. Public transportation is an enhancement for the Rosslyn site. For a summary of the Environmental Assessment, please see http://parkplanning.nps.gov/arlingtonboathouse . Alternative C is pictured on the web site above.
