Proposed Speed Limit Changes on Wilson and Clarendon Boulevards

On February 12, 2011, the County Board adopted the Streets Element of the Master Transportation Plan, which provides a policy framework for the design and operations of streets in Arlington. Policy 8 calls for the adoption of 25 miles per hour as the standard speed limit for all arterial streets within Arlington County’s “downtown” districts, as well as the review of speed limits on other arterials streets. The Transportation Engineering and Operations Bureau of the Department of Environmental Services has conducted speed limit studies for one street within and one street adjacent to the North Rosslyn Civic Association boundaries. Studies conducted for Wilson Boulevard between Route 110 and Washington Boulevard and for Clarendon Boulevard between Washington Boulevard and N. Oak Street have been completed. The results of those studies support lowering the speed limit on both streets from 30 miles per hour to 25 miles per hour.

At its June 15, 2013 meeting, the County Board will consider a Request to Advertise a public hearing on July 13, 2013 to amend the County Code and lower the speed limits accordingly. Should the Request to Advertise be approved, a public hearing on the proposed changes will be held during the regular County Board meeting on July 13, 2012. If you have any questions or concerns about this issue, please let me know.

Sincerely,

Patricia Bush
