Preservation of Wilson School

This Saturday morning (4/18) the County Board meeting will include discussions on both Rosslyn Highlands Park and Wilson School.

Around 8:30 AM park advocates will stand, as a representative speaks for preserving Rosslyn Highlands Park. The County Board currently plans to cede part of the park to a developer in exchange for a new fire station. In my opinion this is intensely wrong-minded.

Might be worth a morning stroll to the County Bldg at Courthouse to stand with your neighbors.

Immediately after the public comment period, at around 9:00 AM the County Board will decide whether to preserve Wilson School. I will speak in favor. Wouldn't it be nice to have a Community Building (as exist in several Arlington neighborhoods) for recreation and adult education?

I include below Stan Karson's note to residents in the RAFOM nieghborhood, just south of North Rosslyn, asking that they come and speak about preserving Wilson School.

Note from Stan Karson to RAFOM

This coming Saturday, April 18. the County Board has on its agenda the recommendation of the Historical Affairs and Landmark Review Board (HALRB) to give the 1910 Wilson School building historical designation. RAFOM has been in the forefront of the effort to save the last historic building in our area from demolition, which the School Board has been determined to do as it proceeds with its plan to construct a new school on the site.

We are supportive of a new school and preserving the important existing open space. Restoring the existing building to its original 1910 structure, as unanimously recommended by the HALRB, would in no way preclude a new school building nor limit existing open space. We have urged that the new building incorporate the restored structure.

Those of you who are concerned about saving the last remaining historic school in Arlington are urged to come out to support our long effort Saturday. This will be our last public opportunity to save Wilson School.

It would be even more helpful if you could sign up to speak on this community issue.

The HALRB item is the first on the County Board's agenda following Public Comments, so jklyou should try to arrive by 9 AM. The Board meets on the 3rd floor of the County office building at 2100 Clarendon Blvd, and free parking is available in the garage beneath the building.
We want to thank you in advance for your vital support this Saturday. This is the first time we have appealed to RAFOM members to come out to a County Board meeting on an issue we have worked so hard on for so long.

Stan Karson
