VCE Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia (Alexandria/Arlington) have scheduled the following free events in March 2014. We hope you will be able to share this information widely with your neighbors, friends, and family.



Saturday, March 8, Arlington Home Show and Garden Expo, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. —Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 3501 2nd Street S., Arlington 22204. Be sure to check out the Green Room and Stage demonstrations from Master Gardeners and VCE volunteers: Seed Starting, 10-11 a.m.; Urban Agriculture: Food for the City, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Bare Root Tree Planting Demonstration, 3 to 4 p.m.; Organic Lawn Care Options, 4 to 5 p.m. This show offers news you can use for sustainable landscape management and home maintenance.



Tuesday, March 11, Turf Management for Urban Gardeners, 7 to 8:30 p.m. Fairlington Community Center, 3308 S. Stafford St., Arlington 22206. Dr. Mike Goatley, Turfgrass Extension Specialists and Professor of Crop and Soil Environmental Sciences at Virginia Tech, will talk about turfgrass selection for our area, specific springtime turf management practices, nutrient management and soil testing, and basic pest and disease management. Series of Wednesday evening programs on Urban Gardening beginning March 12 and continuing through October 15, 7 to 9 p.m., Arlington Central Library, 1015 N. Quincy St., Arlington. This series, taught by Arlington Food Assistance Center volunteers and by VCE Master Gardeners, is designed to teach gardening skills to a wide audience. It covers such topics as crop selection and soils, seed starting, edible landscaping, composting and soil, and starting the spring garden. Vegetable Gardening 101, Saturday, March 15, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Burke Library, 4701 Seminary Road, Alexandria, and Saturday, March 22, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Arlington Central Library, 1014 N. Quincy St., Arlington. VCE Master Gardeners and Horticultural Agent Kirsten Buhls will guide participants through the basics of seed starting, soil preparation, and when and where to plant.
