Arlington County Police have sent the following message for distribution to our community:

All, I hope everyone had a great summer with your loved ones. As we start the beginning of fall season, couple of things for everyone:

First, today is the first day of school in Arlington. You should see quite a bit of police presence in and around schools. Please be mindful if you are driving around the school especially since during the first two weeks, everyone is trying to get accustomed to schools being open again and the traffic that it brings at the start and end of school.

Second, below is the department’s statement in reference to Ms. Bonnie Black’s homicide:

On Thursday, September 3rd, at approximately 0645 hours, members of the Arlington County Police Department executed a search warrant at the residence of Mr. David Black. This search warrant was based on information learned during the course of the continuing investigation into the murder of Ms. Bonnie Black. The purpose of the search warrant was to locate and recover additional items that may contain evidentiary value to the case. Detectives and investigators continue to dedicate hundreds of hours of investigative effort and continue to utilize numerous resources into this very active investigation.

During the execution of the search warrant, Mr. Black remained on scene for a period of time, was cooperative with detectives and was not arrested. Prior to the completion of the execution of the search warrant Mr. Black left the scene voluntarily and on his own free will.

The Police Department recognizes the murder of Ms. Black and the events that have occurred in the neighborhood have had a devastating and profound effect on the family of Ms. Black, her friends and her neighbors and we continue to work this case in a very methodical, professional and thorough manner. We would like to, once again, express our condolences to the family and friends of Ms. Black and our gratitude to the community for your patience as we continue to work to bring the person(s) responsible to justice.

Third, our next round for ‘Coffee with a Cop’ will take place on Thursday, September 17th, at Bob and Edith’s new location at 539 S. 23rd Street. We are set to meet from 4 – 6 PM. Please join the 2nd District Team to discuss issues of concern to you. This event is not limited to just 2nd District community, all are welcome. Please pass this information to others and we hope to see you there.

The monthly crime statistical report will be forwarded to you hopefully by the end of this week or early next week.

Thanks

Captain Kamran Afzal
